Balaam Wood School is a small 11-16 school on the outskirts of Birmingham in an area of deprivation with limited community resources. We are positioned in the centre of this caring community and are a small school with a big heart. At Balaam Wood School reading is a huge focus. Many of our students, on entry, are low readers and have scores well below their actual ages. It is well documented that being able to read widely leads to better exam results, employment and long-term financial stability. We feel passionately that every student at Balaam Wood achieve their potential and know the importance of reading in this journey. Unlike many secondary schools we don't have a library.
In order to change this, two years ago, we painted a storage room in bright colours, added some bookcases and a Reading Room was born. Since, we have collected books from donations and small budget allocations. The students use the room for reading lessons, lunch clubs, book clubs and a place to chill with a book and spend time with their friends. Excitingly, we have been given a new space in school to build an even bigger and better space. We are calling this The Hub and plan to launch this at Christmas. Our vision is a learning environment with even more books, e-readers, chill out spaces, book borrowing, breakfast club, homework clubs, and a place for our KS4 students to do revision. The work will be carried out by our proud and committed students, parents, staff and governors. However, this vision can only be truly achieved with a little help. We are not funded for a library and so any donations will enrich and develop our resource even further. The Hub is going to be the beating heart of our school and local community.
Please offer us your support and be part of this exciting venture.
